With several new advancements in our road weather programs and applications to improve services to our customers, 2018 has been a year full of exciting developments for Iteris’ road weather team.
Highlights include the release of our new ClearPath Weather mobile app, the addition of tips and tricks videos for our applications, and the expansion of our road weather services to municipalities around the country. So without further ado here is our 2018 year in review.
ClearPath Weather Releases New Mobile App
This fall the Iteris Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS) mobile app underwent a huge makeover. The new app is significantly more user friendly and incorporates many of the newer features from WebMDSS. Upon logging in, users can access the main menu, map and sites, as well as routes that are recently viewed or marked as a favorite.
On the map, routes are shown as color-coded graphs displaying alerts for that area. Each route segment provides information on current conditions for the route, the maintenance action suggested and a summary of the weather forecast. In addition to the maps, traffic cameras and (where available-soon to be added) truck cameras can be viewed through the mobile app to get an accurate picture of the current road conditions. One of the major benefits for this update includes the ability to utilize MDSS within a maintenance vehicle or while supervising road conditions. Manual reporting of weather and road conditions can be updated through a personal device, as well as incorporating mobile Road Weather Information System (RWIS) information.
ClearPath Weather Platform Expands
For this winter season, we have added several cities and counties across the country to the ClearPath Weather platform. Users will now have additional access, expanded to cover regional and more specific city street information. Each of the municipalities will have improved access to see radar information specific to their immediate area. Current municipal users will now also get access to the new ClearPath Weather interface, where new features and functionality (inspired by departments of transportation involved in the MDSS Pooled Fund Study) allow for a quick view of expected road alerts, a more visual representation of the weather impacts on the road within the heads-up display, and an overall better training program.
Tips-and-Tricks Videos Added to ClearPath Weather Interfaces
New tips-and-tricks videos provide customers with a quick-start guide to using weather information applications. Each video is approximately 3-5 minutes long and provides definitions and explanations about how these phenomena are identified. When used, these videos identify how to turn on the parameters to monitor conditions in the customer’s immediate area. Watching these videos gives a better understanding of how to predict fire potential, freezing rain, blow ice, blowing snow, fog and current conditions in your area.
Mobile RWIS Added for Several Agencies on WebMDSS
Mobile RWIS will be a per-agency property. When utilized, the map will show an icon for each mobile RWIS unit that has reported within the past hour. It will show only the most recent reading for that unit if there is more than one in that hour. Clicking on a mobile RWIS icon displays a detailed report for that unit.
The app will show “breadcrumbs" such as truck location etc., associated with the device's last 24 hours’ worth of readings. Each icon will be colored according to the legend associated with the variable selected. Hovering over a breadcrumb, a tool tip appears displaying the truck's assigned ident, report time and value of the selected variable. This information will help to provide an immediate update on road conditions in locations where there is not an RWIS site already located.
2019 promises to bring more advancements with even greater accessibility and more detailed information as we continue to enhance our road weather platform.
