How is Iteris Preventing Red-Light Running Crashes?

Did you know that a staggering 31% of drivers admitted to running a red light within the last month in a 2019 AAA survey? With 40% of all crashes occurring at intersections—many due to red-light runners—the resulting 165,000 crashes claim up to 800 lives annually.

At Iteris, we’re addressing this problem with an innovative set of solutions and services that aim to prevent these dangerous collisions. Combining advanced hardware and software, our ClearMobility® platform has what communities need to improve intersection safety. Here’s how:

1. Smart detection: Iteris traffic sensors predict when a vehicle is likely to run a red light by analyzing speed and distance from the stop bar. These sensors alert the signal controller to extend the red light on the opposing side and warn connected vehicles of the impending danger. The sensors can also signal the controller to hold a phase green to help reduce rear-end collisions caused by vehicles slamming on their brakes to avoid running a red light.

2. Data insights: The traffic data collected is sent to the Iteris Cloud, where our AI models assess potential risks and recommend mitigation strategies for future incidents.

3. Smart software: Traffic operators use Iteris ClearGuide® software to continuously monitor traffic patterns and adjust signal timing to reduce the likelihood of crashes at intersections.

By harnessing the power of data and real-time insights, Iteris is making intersections safer and minimizing red-light running incidents. Watch the video above to learn more and see for yourself.
