Webinar Recap: Managing Traffic in a Connected World

As connected vehicle (CV) technology continues to evolve, transportation agencies across the country are exploring how to harness its potential to improve safety, efficiency, and mobility. In a recent webinar we hosted, an expert from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) joined us to share how they’re turning that vision into reality with the help of VantageArgus CV™.

Real-World Innovation in Florida

Our special guest James Landini, an engineer at FDOT, walked attendees through the state’s impressive deployment of the VantageArgus CV platform, a centralized system for monitoring and managing connected vehicle and travel time data. With over 2,400 BlueTOAD® Bluetooth devices and 535 roadside units (RSUs) deployed across the state, Florida is building a robust foundation for V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication.

The platform’s hierarchical structure allows FDOT to manage devices at the state, district, and local levels—enabling cities, counties, and MPOs to collaborate and share data seamlessly. Real-world examples from Tallahassee, Seminole County, and Escambia County illustrated how agencies are using the platform to monitor traffic flow, detect congestion, and post real-time alerts.

From Data to Decisions

One of the most compelling aspects of the webinar was how FDOT is using CV data to inform planning and emergency response. For example:

  • Beach Traffic Management: Escambia County used origin-destination data to understand weekend travel patterns to Pensacola Beach, helping inform parking and infrastructure improvements.
  • Hurricane Evacuation Analysis: During Hurricane Helene in 2024, FDOT analyzed evacuation routes from Tallahassee to cities like Jacksonville and Orlando. The insights helped refine emergency shoulder use plans and improve detection coverage for future storms.

These examples show how CV data isn’t just about real-time operations—it’s a powerful tool for long-term planning and resilience.
