According to a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, the projected U.S. pedestrian fatality rate per billion vehicle miles traveled (VMT) jumped to 2.2 deaths for the first six months of 2020, compared with 1.8 deaths during the same period in 2019 – a 20% increase.

Based on analysis of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, it is projected that 2,957 pedestrians were killed on U.S. roads in the first half of 2020, despite a 16.5% decrease in VMT in that period.

These numbers highlight the importance of using all available technologies and tools to proactively and pre-emptively work to reduce potentially fatal traffic incidents at the intersection and beyond.
