The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) recently announced that Iteris’ Pete Yauch, P.E., PTOE, RSP2I has been selected to receive one of the organization’s top honors – the Burton W. Marsh Award for Distinguished Service.

According to ITE, the award was established in 1970 to honor the legacy of long-time active ITE member and traffic engineering pioneer Burton W. Marsh, and seeks to “recognize an individual who has contributed to the advancement of ITE over a period of years in an outstanding fashion”.

“Pete’s engagement in ITE has been both significant and sustained. He continues to share his considerable knowledge and expertise with members on a regular basis and is a long-time leader in the Florida District. His many contributions to ITE have made us a stronger, more effective organization. He is certainly deserving of this honor,” said Jeffrey F. Paniati, P.E. (F), ITE executive director and CEO.

Pete, who currently serves as vice president and TSM&O practice leader in Iteris’ Consulting Solutions group out of the company’s Tampa, FL, office, is a native of St. Petersburg, FL. He joined ITE as a student member at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1975, before serving as the student chapter president in 1977. He has twice served as president of ITE’s Florida Puerto Rico District, represented the district as a member of the International Board of Direction, and is currently in his fifth year as the district administrator.

Before joining Iteris’ predecessor firm, Albeck Gerken, in 2012, he was the director of public works and transportation, and assistant county administrator for Pinellas County, FL. Prior to that, he worked in both the public and private sectors, including serving as the city traffic engineer for the City of Clearwater, FL, and the district signal systems and safety engineer for the Tampa Bay area district of the Florida Department of Transportation.

Pete has been an ITE fellow since 1998 and a peer reviewer for ITE Journal since 1986. He has received many awards over the years, including the John R. Freeman FLPRITE District Transportation Professional of the Year (2001), the Nathan H. “Nat” Rambo FLPRITE District Fellowship Award (2012) and the Sherwood H. “Woody” Hiller FLPRITE District Distinguished Service Award (2013).

Before the rise of AI-powered detection, we relied on what is now called traditional machine vision (MV). Any technically competent person could set up a processor, download a detection algorithm from the cloud, plug in a video source and start detecting vehicles. These systems have been prevalent over the years and appeared effective, but often relied on an optimal field of view and near-perfect weather conditions. See More >
