Iteris Highlights Smart Solutions for Year-Round Bicycle Safety

For this year’s National Bike Month, and building off of our recent bicycle safety campaigns, Iteris is once again taking the opportunity to promote bicycle awareness and life-saving bicycle detection technology because a helmet is (still) not enough and we want all cyclists to be seen and get the green.

No matter what reason you ride your bicycle – whether to get to work, for exercise or simply to do your part to help the environment – it should be a safe experience. Iteris is proud to help keep bicyclists safe by working with cities throughout the country to implement advanced detection technologies that provide extra green time for cyclists when they cross signalized intersections that are equipped with Iteris’ SmartCycle video detection algorithm for bicycle detection and differentiation.

Detection is central to bike safety

When cyclists are detected, SmartCycle tells the traffic signal controller to extend the green phase to enable cyclists to safely cross the intersection, but how do the cyclists know they have been detected? This is where the SmartCycle Bike Indicator comes in.

Communication makes cyclists feel safer

Leveraging SmartCycle’s bicycle detection algorithm, the SmartCycle Bike Indicator is a device that mounts onto traffic signals and illuminates when cyclists waiting at an intersection have been detected. Because this touchless device lights up to let cyclists know they have been detected, it removes the need to dismount at busy intersections to push a button.

Not All AI Is Created the Same: Inside Our AI Detection System

Before the rise of AI-powered detection, we relied on what is now called traditional machine vision (MV). Any technically competent person could set up a processor, download a detection algorithm from the cloud, plug in a video source and start detecting vehicles. These systems have been prevalent over the years and appeared effective, but often relied on an optimal field of view and near-perfect weather conditions. See More >
