A Case for Speed-Sensitive Radar and Video Detection with Iteris’ Vantage Vector

The purpose of detection at traffic signals has shifted dramatically in recent years. Today, there is a greater need to detect more than just vehicles, and the proliferation of data has changed everything.

The Vantage Vector hybrid sensor combines the strengths of speed-sensitive radar and video detection technologies in a single sensor to support advanced safety and data collection applications.

Below are six reasons from our white paper on why your agency should consider a hybrid sensor such as Vantage Vector.

1. Reduce Rear-end Collisions with Decision Zone Detection

A primary safety application of the Vantage Vector is to detect and track vehicles upstream in the decision zone and provide inputs to the traffic controller to hold a phase green. This is an effective strategy for reducing rear-end collisions at the intersection caused by vehicles slamming on their brakes to avoid running a red light.

Below are two additional resources on decision zone detection:

2. Predict and Mitigate Red-light Running Collisions

Another safety application of Vantage Vector is to predict red-light runners using forward-fire radar to dynamically extend the red clearance to avoid right-angle collisions. Learn about the three ways cities can mitigate red-light running at the intersection.

3. Collect Automatic Turning Movement Counts

A high-resolution video detection camera allows Vantage Vector to provide automatic turning movement counts (straight, left turn, right turn) for vehicles within the field of view. This provides crucial data for signal performance measures (SPM).

4. Protect Vulnerable Road Users with Bicycle and Pedestrian Detection

Vantage Vector uses video detection and embedded algorithms to detect and differentiate bicycles and pedestrians accurately. This enables agencies to adjust signal timing to accommodate slower-moving road users and implement advanced intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications (e.g., alerts to connected vehicles or pedestrian-crossing conflict countermeasures).

5. Maximize Signal Performance Measures (SPM)

Vantage Vector is the ideal sensor for SPM as it provides extensive data sets no other sensor or combination of sensors can offer. The radar sensor provides lane-by-lane advance detection and counts while the video camera differentiates between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

6. Augment Adaptive Control Systems

Stop bar presence, stop bar count and advance detection zones are common requirements for adaptive control algorithms. Vantage Vector provides these critical lane-by-lane data sets to make adaptive control systems function at peak performance.
