Bentonville: A New Way of Counting Traffic Data

2 min. Read • Posted 03/12/2020

Over the past 20 years, Bentonville has transformed itself from a relatively unassuming Arkansas town to a bustling center of commerce and culture, making it a community of choice in Northwest Arkansas and the fastest-growing city in the state.

With rapid new developments and a thriving tourism economy, Bentonville's traffic management team is challenged with easily and efficiently tracking and planning for population growth as well as daily fluctuations in its heavy commuter traffic.

Whereas previously, the traffic team would have to physically drive out to an intersection to respond to a citizen complaint about a faulty traffic signal or poor signal timing, the city recently implemented a new system to count traffic data for vehicles, bikes and pedestrians, and gain a better understanding of traffic patterns.

Since installing VantageLive! in June 2019 for traffic data collection, the city leverages real-time traffic data to adjust signal timing as needed at Bentonville's Traffic Monitoring Control Center.

By using VantageLive! with video detection, Bentonville replaced a four-week data collection process with automated counting, and can now provide accurate traffic counts within a matter of minutes.

The city also no longer has to wait for citizen complaints to react to faulty traffic signals or inefficient timing. They can see it all from the TMC and troubleshoot any signal problems significantly more quickly and efficiently.
