APWA Names Iteris' Downtown Manhattan Beach Traffic Signal Upgrade Program Project of the Year
Iteris is proud to announce that the City of Manhattan Beach’s Downtown Traffic Signal Upgrade program was named Project of the Year in the Traffic, Mobility and Beautification category of the American Public Works Association's (APWA) 2021 BEST (Building Excellence Shaping Tomorrow) awards.
Iteris is proud to have played a key role in the project, initially by creating a citywide traffic signal inventory and providing design services for five signals in the downtown area, which were upgraded with new poles, wiring, cabinets and signal hardware, and then following inspection support during construction, the addition of pedestrian scrambles at the two intersections.
Iteris' design of the layout of the two new pedestrian scramble crosswalks at the Manhattan Beach Boulevard / Manhattan and Manhattan Beach Boulevard / Highland intersections were made all the more eye catching by the artwork of JoJo Cortez and Eilen Stewart.
According to Manhattan Beach senior civil engineer Tim Birthisel, P. E., the work was dovetailed into the previously approved downtown traffic signal upgrade project and is being completed before the summer season to minimize construction work inconvenience to area businesses and pedestrians.
"The artwork is intended to enhance the pedestrian mobility across the intersections and meet the required pedestrian marking standards for scrambled crosswalks while incorporating the new city logo as the centerpiece," Birthisel said.
