Saia, Inc. Adopts Iteris' Lane Departure Technology
--Fleets Nationwide Continuing to Implement Safety Technology to Reduce Human and Financial Impact of Lane Departure Accidents--
Santa Ana, Calif. ?Iteris, Inc., a leader in the development and application of advanced technologies that help reduce traffic congestion and improve the safety of surface transportation systems, today announced Saia Inc, one of the top ten carriers in the less-than-truckload (LTL) sector, is making Iteris? AutoVue™ Lane Departure Warning (LDW) Systems a standard part of all it?s new tractor purchases.
Iteris? LDW system helps to prevent side swipe, run-off-road and inadvertent lane change accidents caused by fatigue, inattention or distraction. A windshield mounted camera uses ?machine vision technology? to track visible lane markings and warns drivers when they are leaving the lane or roadway, anywhere there are lane markings. Fleets using Iteris? LDW systems have reported an average of 77% reduction in lane departure-related accidents, inadvertent lane change, sideswipe or run-off-road accidents.
?At Saia, ensuring the safety of our trucks on the road is of the utmost importance, not only for our drivers, but also for our customers and the communities we serve,? states Rick O?Dell, president and chief executive officer. ?Providing our drivers with the most up-to-date technology highlights our focus on safety and the roll it plays everyday in our company.?
?We are pleased that Saia has chosen to implement Iteris? Lane Departure Warning Systems,? states Francis Memole, Sr. vice president and general manager, Vehicle Sensors, for Iteris. ?Historically, fleets who have installed these systems have realized significant bottom-line benefits.?
Saia has received 140 units Iteris? LDW systems to date and has made Iteris' LDW a standard part of new truck?s specifications. Iteris? LDW system was the first-of-its-kind to be deployed in the commercial truck and passenger car markets and it still remains the only vision-based system in mass production in the U.S. and Europe. Iteris has sold over 49,000 LDW systems to the heavy truck market worldwide representing an estimated billion of miles traveled per year. In the U.S., there are currently 66 fleets specifying Iteris? LDW system and another 85 fleets with approximately 157,000 trucks conducting field tests.
