Comparing the first full day of the closure, Thursday 8/29/2013, to the average weekday this summer, the data shows significant changes in inbound traffic patterns in response to the Bay Bridge closure:
- Traffic volumes over the San Mateo Bridge increased by approximately 62%.
- Traffic volumes through North Bay alternative routes, including the Richmond Bridge, SR37, and Highway 101 increased 27%.
- Traffic volumes over the Dumbarton Bridge increased 12%.
- Traffic volumes on the major Bay Bridge approaches in the East Bay dropped 25%, including a 20% drop in traffic via SR 24W through the Caldecott Tunnel, and a 25% drop in traffic along I-80W between Albany and the MacArthur Maze.
- BART noted increased ridership, achieving third highest levels ever recorded for weekday ridership.
- Many telecommuted.
