Candidate Architecture Flows for Future Standardization

Many new architecture flows were created to support the most recent version of the National ITS Architecture, most of which are candidates for standardization. Additionally, there are a number of architecture flows from the previous version of the Architecture that have not yet been addressed by standardization groups. Although proper definition of the lower communications layers (protocols) is important to the overall standardization of the interfaces, the contents of the National ITS Architecture primarily provides assistance in the standardization of the actual information exchanged (called objects, data elements, and messages) between ITS systems.

The architecture flows in the National ITS Architecture that are candidates for future standardization have been separated into standards development categories to assist in their standardization. In some cases, a given architecture flow may be assigned to multiple standardization categories (and indicated by the Handshake symbol). Standards development organizations that wish to standardize such a flow should coordinate with the other organizations to ensure the creation of a common definition and thereby facilitate interoperability.
