National ITS Architecture
Website and CD-ROM Compatibility Information
Although we strive to make the National ITS Architecture website and CD-ROM compatible with all popular operating system and browser configurations, there are differences between these systems that almost inevitably lead to minor incompatibilities. Here are issues that have been identified through our compatibility testing with notes on how to resolve the issue where possible.
SVGZ File Compatibility.
The logical architecture diagrams are stored in compressed Scalable Vector Graphic (SVGZ) format. This format is great for on-line display of these complex diagrams, but it can cause problems for older browsers. Here are a couple of the issues that we have seen with workarounds:
- If your browser can't display SVG files, it will try to download an SVG Viewer the first time you try to display a logical architecture diagram. If the download is unsuccessful (e.g., you don't have Internet access), then your browser will not be able to display the diagrams and will not try to download the SVG Viewer again. To recover, you will need to delete all browser cookies and then try to display a logical architecture diagram again while you have Internet access. This will cause the viewer to be downloaded and installed. To delete all cookies in Internet Explorer, select Tools/Internet Options, and then select "Delete Cookies."
- The SVG viewer that is included with some browsers (e.g., Firefox 2.0) is not compatible with the compressed SGVZ format. All of the logical architecture diagrams are also available here in uncompressed SGV format so that you can view the logical architecture diagrams using one of these browsers. You can also check the SVG Implementation and Resource Directory for the most current set of SVG resources to see if there is better SVG support available for your particular browser.
Page Content Not Being Displayed
The page content for some pages is not being displayed when using Internet Explorer on a Macintosh. There is no known fix for this. Netscape 7 for the Macintosh does not have this issue.
Search Engine Compatibility.
The Search capability is a Java application that requires a recent Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM) to be installed on your PC. This will be transparent to most users because most PCs already have the required software installed, but users of some Windows systems may find that the search capability does not work. To fix the search capability on these systems, download and install the most recent version of the Sun JRE from http://www.java.com. There are no known workarounds for Macintosh users at this time.
Search Engine is not moving to first highlighted search term.
Browser affected: Netscape
The Netscape Browser does not automatically position the search results page to the first highlighted search term. Netscape users can manually scroll the page to see the highlighted search terms in the search results.
Autostart capability on CD-ROM does not work.
Browser affected: Netscape Version 4.73 and Windows 2000
This can be fixed by making sure that the following properties are set for how an "HTM" file type gets opened by Netscape.
This only is for the "open" attribute under the "Actions" property.
Properties:
- Action: open
- Application: NSShell
- Topic: WWW_OpenURL
Clicking on the index.htm file on the CD-ROM from the
My Computer window does not display anything.

Back button not working after a glossary term is selected.
Browser affected: Netscape Version 6.1 and 6.2
There is no known fix for this. Internet Explorer does not have this issue.
The description, that automatically "pop-up" when you hold
the mouse icon over a diagram, are not word wrapping.
Browser affected: Netscape Version 4.7
There is no known fix for this. Internet Explorer does not have this issue.
