Weather Service (Terminator*)

This terminator provides weather, hydrologic, and climate information and warnings of hazardous weather including thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, winter weather, tsunamis, and climate events. It provides atmospheric weather observations and forecasts that are collected and derived by the National Weather Service, private sector providers, and various research organizations. This terminator represents the Clarus system, which collects environmental data from ITS systems, assesses the quality of the data, and disseminates the qualified data upon request (including dissemination to ITS systems). The interface provides formatted weather data products suitable for on-line processing and integration with other ITS data products as well as Doppler radar images, satellite images, severe storm warnings, and other products that are formatted for presentation to various ITS users.

Terminator Interfaces Diagram

This is a context diagram for the entity Weather Service Terminator that shows every architecture flow that this entity sends or receives, as defined in the National ITS Architecture. A complete list of all architecture flows shown on this diagram, is available under the Inputs/Outputs section on this page.

Inputs/Outputs: Architecture Flows* and Data Flows*

Archived Data Management flows into Weather Service

  • archive requests (Architecture Flow*) - A request to a data source for information on available data (i.e. "catalog") or a request that defines the data to be archived. The request can be a general subscription intended to initiate a continuous or regular data stream or a specific request intended to initiate a one-time response from the recipient.
    Data Flows*:

  • archive status (Architecture Flow*) - Notification that data provided to an archive contains erroneous, missing, or suspicious data or verification that the data provided appears valid. If an error has been detected, the offending data and the nature of the potential problem are identified.

Roadway flows into Weather Service

  • environmental probe data (Architecture Flow*) - Data from vehicle safety and convenience systems that can be used to estimate environmental conditions, including measured air temperature, exterior light status, wiper status, sun sensor status, rain sensor status, traction control status, anti-lock brake status, and other collected vehicle system status and sensor information. The collected data is reported along with the location, heading, and time that the data was collected. Both current data and snapshots of recent events (e.g., traction control or anti-lock brake system activations) may be reported.
    Data Flows*:

  • environmental sensor data (Architecture Flow*) - Current road conditions (e.g., surface temperature, subsurface temperature, moisture, icing, treatment status) and surface weather conditions (e.g., air temperature, wind speed, precipitation, visibility) as measured and reported by fixed and/or mobile environmental sensors. Operational status of the sensors is also included.
    Data Flows*:

Traffic Management flows into Weather Service

  • environmental conditions data (Architecture Flow*) - Current road conditions (e.g., surface temperature, subsurface temperature, moisture, icing, treatment status) and surface weather conditions (e.g., air temperature, wind speed, precipitation, visibility) as measured and reported by fixed and/or mobile environmental sensors and aggregated by the data collector. Attributes relating to the data collection (and aggregation) are also included.
    Data Flows*:

Weather Service flows into Archived Data Management

  • weather archive data (Architecture Flow*) - Accumulated forecasted and current weather data (e.g., temperature, pressure, wind speed, wind direction, humidity, precipitation, visibility, light conditions, etc.) as well as qualified environmental sensor data. Content may include a catalog of available information, the actual information to be archived, and associated meta data that describes the archived information.
