Vehicle Safety Application Area
Description
This vehicle-to-vehicle application area covers the interface between vehicles that are equipped with a short range communications device. Each vehicle broadcasts to other vehicles its own location, motion (speed, heading, acceleration), anticipated lane and movement, status of systems onboard the vehicle (anti-lock brake activation, stability control system activation), and basic vehicle characteristics (length, width). In turn, the vehicle receives similar data from other vehicles. By using this collected data while monitoring its own speed and trajectory, environmental and roadway conditions, the vehicle could determine the likelihood of a collision and deploy a pre-crash safety system either to avoid the accident or to reduce the accident.
National ITS Architecture Interface
This application area includes the short range communications interface between the Vehicle Subsystem (VS) and the Other Vehicles terminator and is used to exchange vehicle location, motion, anticipated movements, status of systems onboard the vehicle (e.g., anti-lock brake activation, steering, throttle, lighting systems), and basic vehicle characteristics.
